If you read our article about using your birth chart as a career blueprint, you may have discovered interesting insights about what career might suit you best. While this can be incredibly enlightening in clarifying what it is you truly want to accomplish professionally, you might still be sitting here in your same old job you don’t like, thinking…but when is it going to happen for me?
The fact is, our journey with career and purpose is a long and spiraling path that often feels chaotic. Nonlinear career paths are becoming increasingly more common in the job market today, and there’s always a meaning behind that journey — literally and astrologically.
What I’ve found to be the best tool to help me understand the timing of this journey is astrology transits (the real-time movement of the planets). While your birth chart teaches you about your core essence, your transit chart guides you in your sense of timing.
A Transit Chart is essentially 2 charts layered on top of each other, creating 2 circles of planets. The first chart is your own Birth Chart, the one you know and love. The second chart shows the planets in real time, layered on top of your birth chart.
Our beautiful example below is our very own Head of Growth, Alexa DaFonte:
The inner circle is Alexa’s Birth Chart. The outer circle are the transiting planets today, July 14th.
There is a great free transit chart tool on astro-seek.com. Pull yours up and follow along! BTW- if you’re into this, you should totally participate in Lora’s Beta Program to go deeper into transits.
When it comes to Career Timing, we are going to focus on transits to three houses: the 2nd, 6th, and 10th. These houses are the work houses of your chart, and we wrote all about them in our Career Blueprint article.
To recap:
- 2nd house rules how you make money
- 6th house rules your day-to-day work and service
- 10th house rules your career, reputation, and what you’re known for
Because a Transit Chart is always layered on top of your Birth Chart, we can see when planets transit these houses of your Birth Chart. In Alexa’s chart, her work houses are ruled by Taurus, Leo, and Capricorn:
Locate these houses in your own chart. When you are looking at a Transit Chart, you can animate the chart to go back & forward in time. You can do that on AstroSeek in the panel on the right-hand side.
What we are looking for is when planets transit your work houses.
For planets transiting the 2nd house, expect:
- Changes in the way you make money
- Added focus on hustling and making more money
- Bonus payouts and promotions
- Layoffs, job changes, financial security changes
For planets transiting the 6th house, expect:
- Role changes within your company
- Changes to the responsibilities of your current role
- Switching companies
- Added focus on workplace dynamics
The 10th house is special because the 10th house cusp (the line that begins the 10th house) is called the Midheaven, and it rules your public perception, purpose, and career. So we will look at both planets transiting the 10th house AND planets that are making a hard aspect (square or opposition) to the Midheaven. For these transits, expect:
- Completely changing career path into a new industry/arena
- Starting an entrepreneurial venture that aligns with your passion
- Becoming elevated and more visible in your current role
- Being noticed for your talents and professional opportunities from external sources
The way a transit to your work houses actually affects your career path largely depends on what planet is making the transit. Here are some themes as you are watching the planets move around your chart:
- Sun Transits: These last about a month and provide an added focus to the house it’s transiting
- Moon Transits: These are incredibly short (~2 days), so focus more on New Moons and Full Moons. A New Moon represents a reset and a Full Moon represents something coming to fruition.
- Mercury Transits: Focus more on Mercury Retrogrades. These transits will have you rethinking and changing how you go about that area of your career.
- Venus Transits: Overall, this will make things feel more pleasurable/easy for a few weeks. However, when Venus is retrograde, you may experience a decrease in confidence in this arena or just have to make some changes.
- Mars Transits: Creates motivation, can sever connections, or bring challenges you need to overcome.
- Jupiter Transits: These will last a year and are very important to pay attention to. Jupiter brings expansion and growth to the house it is transiting. Sometimes, in order to grow, you may have to lose something- for example, deciding to leave your corporate job during a Jupiter transit in the 10th house may temporarily bring challenge and instability, but in the longer term, it was an essential step in your professional growth.
- Saturn Transits: These will last ~2.5 years and are also very important to pay attention to. Saturn rules our structure and foundations, so when it is transiting the work houses, you’ll experience added pressure, the need to commit, potential downsizing, or delays. Saturn can also bring structural changes to the house it is transiting; for example, Saturn transiting the 6th house and you change office locations to work on a new team at the same company.
- Uranus Transits: These will last ~8 years, so I’d pay attention to specific moments including: when Uranus first enters the house, if/when Uranus makes hard aspects to any of your Birth Planets, and when any Transiting Planets make a hard aspect to transiting Uranus. These moments will highlight the transit. Uranus themes include disruptions to your career path, sudden changes, fast innovation, and added passion.
- Neptune Transits: These will last ~14 years, so use the same guidelines I outlined for Uranus. Neptune themes include endings, confusion/disillusionment, and added faith or idealism (for example, with Neptune transiting the 2nd house, you could overidealize the idea of making more money and create a fantasy around it).
- Pluto Transits: These will last really long, between 12-30 years depending on the sign. So use those guidelines I provided for Uranus! Pluto themes include huge overhauls, transformations, loss + rebirth.
The last thing to look at for transits to the work houses is really important: The Eclipse Cycle. You can see what eclipse cycle we are in by locating the transiting Nodes. They look like this:
The nodes take ~1.5 years to transit a house, and as they work in opposition, nodal transits to the 2nd house will also transit the 8th house, the 6th will also transit the 12th, and the 10th will also transit the 4th. This makes these career shifts more intense as they integrate the emotional and spiritual component of your professional path. Over the course of a Nodal transit to your work houses, expect big mindset changes, transformations, and deeper alignment with your core purpose vs superficial motivations.
The transiting nodes right now are finishing up their time in Virgo and Pisces and will move into Leo and Aquarius in 12 days (7/26), so pay close attention to that change!
I know this is a ton of information, so to make it less overwhelming, take note of moments in the past when you experienced big career shifts and look at the transit chart for that time. That will help you root into what to look for in the future.
To give you an example, Alexa has had an epically non-linear career path with tons of changes. She graciously allowed me to use her journey so far as an example for us. Let’s follow her career path using the transits to the work houses:
At the beginning of 2018, Alexa departed from her previous Pre-Med path and decided to move to LA to pursue modeling:
This all came to fruition when Saturn entered her 10th house and was exactly on her Midheaven. Remember, the midheaven/10th house represents being seen, and she decided to pursue a path in front of the camera as a model. She made a massive structural shift (Saturn) to her career by moving to LA and diving into the chaotic hustle of modeling vs the linear path of medical school. At this moment, Pluto and Mercury were also in her 10th house.
Fast forward to 2020, Alexa was modeling in Greece when the pandemic hit. Forced to flee, she went back home where shutdowns forced her out of the modeling world, and she decided to pursue a career in Marketing instead:
As you can see, there is a LOT going on in her 10th house at this moment:
- Mars is conjunct the Midheaven, which presented the quick severing of the modeling career and the challenge of the pandemic.
- The Nodes are in her 10th & 4th houses, bringing massive transformation to her career. The North Node was transiting her 4th house at the time, which represents her call to go home (4th house = home).
- Jupiter was also in her 10th house, bringing the initial loss that incited new career growth (as we know, Alexa is now a star marketer and Lora’s head of growth due to the loss of modeling in this moment). Also, Jupiter rules international travel, and she was spending the last few months modeling abroad.
- Pluto was wrapping up its time in her 10th house.
In August 2021, Alexa got her first big Marketing job for a healthcare company. After a year of learning the ropes in this industry, this is considered her first “big girl job”:
This moment is lighting up her 6th house AND 2nd house:
- The Sun, Mars, and Mercury were all transiting her 6th house of daily work. She got a new job in the field she’s already been working in.
- This was Alexa’s Mars Return, when Mars returns to the same sign it was in when you were born. It’s a time of added motivation and drive. This was a moment where Alexa made an achievement she really had to work for.
- All of these planets are transiting the sign of Virgo, which is associated with health care.
- The Nodes were transiting her 2nd and 8th houses, which we know is about changes in finances. As this was Alexa’s biggest marketing job to date, she got a massive boost in her paycheck!
In 2022, Alexa started her own marketing agency as a side hustle that eventually became her main hustle. This was the busiest time in her professional career at that point, working around the clock on a million things. She was making more than ever and had a LOT going on professionally:
The transits at this time were lighting up her 2nd house of money, and also her Midheaven, which was being squared by Jupiter in the 1st house:
- Uranus just entered her 2nd house, bringing disruption and innovation to how she was making money. Everything became faster-paced.
- The Nodes were still in her 2nd and 8th houses.
- Jupiter is making a hard aspect (a square) to her Midheaven. Jupiter expanded her responsibilities, inciting an entrepreneurial venture.
Finally, Alexa makes it to Lora as our Head of Growth!
These transits were highlighting all three of her work houses: 2nd, 6th, and a hard aspect to the Midheaven:
- This was the start of Alexa’s Saturn Return, which is a time of change and increased responsibility. At this time, both Saturn and Neptune were making a square aspect to her Midheaven. Saturn put Alexa into a position of authority (Head of Growth) and Neptune created a spiritual alignment in her career (Lora is rooted in Astrology/Spiritual Discovery).
- The Nodes were in her 6th and 12th houses, bringing transformation to her daily work.
- Uranus was still in her 2nd house.
As you can see, even in a career that feels totally nonlinear, the transits can help us make sense of the changes. What do you see in your own chart? Tell us in the comments!
